Chioma Chukwu is the Executive Director of American Oversight, where she leads the organization’s strategic direction and oversight agenda to expose government corruption, enforce transparency, and hold government actors accountable. She brings extensive experience in civil rights enforcement, government accountability, and strategic litigation.
Chioma previously served as General Counsel of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, where she played a central role in developing and executing the committee’s investigative strategy. Prior to that, she was a senior adviser to the late Rep. Elijah E. Cummings.
As a senior trial attorney at the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, she litigated both individual and systemic employment discrimination cases. She has also served as staff counsel for the California Civil Rights Department and practiced at Sanford Heisler LLP, a national public interest law firm, where she focused on employment and civil rights litigation.
American Oversight addresses the persistent lack of transparency and accountability in government by enforcing the public’s right to information at the federal and state levels. Through investigations, litigation, and strategic communications, the organization uses public records to expose corruption, abuses of power, and coordinated efforts to weaken democratic institutions.
American Oversight’s investigators and attorneys file and litigate public records requests to uncover how government decisions are actually made and carried out. The team makes their findings accessible to the public by publishing documents, explaining their significance, and equipping journalists, advocates, and communities with the evidence they need to hold officials accountable.
By pairing aggressive records enforcement with investigative storytelling, American Oversight ensures that government secrecy cannot shield misconduct and that the truth reaches the public.
